While we all miss seeing each other in person, the art must go on. So … on we go. Until future notice, we’ll be meeting virtually out of concern for everyone’s safety during the pandemic.

February 23 – Monthly Meeting (VIRTUAL)

Presenter: Charles Hildebrandt

Please note:  Virtual meetings start earlier than our in-person meetings have started in the past.

10:30 – Meeting

11:00 – Presentation by Charles Hildebrandt, followed by Q&A.

Please download the Zoom app ahead of time, so you can be ready to join us. Here’s a link to download the app , click on the first blue button (please note, this is not the same link as the one for the  meeting, which will be emailed to you separately by Lisa).

Referred to us by member Amy Gamble (thank you!), arts and entertainment lawyer Charles Hildebrandt will present an overview of copyright law, highlighting specific issues faced by artists and creators every day. Topics will include:
– What is copyright?
– The most common copyright misconceptions
– Transformation, Fair Use, and Public Domain: what can I use?
– How do I protect my work?
Charles Hildebrandt is lead partner for intellectual property and litigation at The Roberts Law Group, a boutique firm offering copyright, trademark, entertainment law, and general commercial representation. His clients have included television networks, film production companies, publishers, museums, game designers, inventors, directors, actors, artists, writers, and music producers. He has negotiated concert agreements with Beyonce and John Legend, and once chased down Isaac Hayes for a copyright release.

Fun fact:  Charles’ father and uncle were the Brothers Hildebrandt, part of the original Star Wars artistic team, they designed the famous Star Wars poster. So you can imagine all the intellectual property issues involved with that.

Please have any questions for Charles ready ahead of time, as a significant portion of his presentation will be Q&A.

About our monthly jury:  For this particular month, we are skipping the jurying of our work, since Charles is not an artist. We will be having another jury in March, though.

March 22 – Randall David Tipton

April 26 – Felicia Forte
