Welcome to Palette and Brush Club

Looking for an art community?

We are a club for artists living and creating in metro Detroit and beyond. Our group meets monthly for presentations by prominent artists, for artistic fellowship, and to share news and accomplishments. Our art club also exhibits twice yearly in venues around the Detroit area and in Oakland County, as well as holding monthly artwork juries and offering paint-alongs and a critique group to foster our artistic development. More on our history and what we offer here.

NEWS

First place. “Self-Portrait,” 13×11, oil. Artist: Jeanne Ruzzin

Congrats to Jeanne Ruzzin, who won first place in our November 2021 jury with this intriguing painting. Juror:  award-winning artist Candace Law.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, Jan. 25th – VIRTUAL ONLY

Due to the high number of Covid cases in Michigan this month, we are moving the January meeting to be via Zoom only.

However, our February meeting will definitely be in person, because we are having an in-person jury of work at the February meeting for our March exhibit at the Plymouth Arts Council.

REMEMBER: We have an upcoming early March exhibit:

Work will be juried at our February 28th meeting for this show. Some quick facts about the exhibit can be found here. Please start thinking about what work you’d like to enter and getting it framed in time. More details and a prospectus to come from Nancy via email.

Our January Presenter – Rick Stevens

Ann has lined up another great artist, Rick Stevens, who will be sharing his process and doing a Q&A from his studio in Santa Fe. According to Rick’s website, his process is ” a journey of exploration of color, light, texture and the poetics of space. A sense of structure is important to me, but I avoid strong divisions. I require a certain ‘fluidity’ where everything is flowing into the next thing. My compositions are infused with an overall light that is all-inclusive. A sort of self generating light rather than one coming from an external source. This doesn’t allow anything to be read as separate from the whole. There is diversity, just like in the natural world, but there is an underlying unity that is apparent.” You can check out Rick’s work as well as his awesome videos.

MONTHLY JURY:  We will have our usual monthly jury. The jury will continue to be handled with online submissions, one per member. Take a good photo of one recent work and send it to Gail Churchill. Deadline:  January 21, 5pm.. Please be respectful of Gail’s time and remember to observe the file naming protocol of LastName.Title.Size.Media.jpg … example:  Richter.PondAtTwilight.12×12.oil

NOTE:  Most months – other than January 2022 – you can attend our meetings in person or via Zoom; this allows us to continue with our nationally known online presenters, as well as being a good option if the weather is bad or your time is limited that day. A Zoom link will be sent via email before each meeting.

ONGOING ACTIVITIES for members

During the months we meet, we currently offer a session to our members every week.

1st Mondays, 10:30 am … Mentors & Protegés. Our critique group. Submit work for feedback or just attend to observe, critique and learn. We’ve been doing these in person of late, but December’s meeting will be via Zoom due to climbing Covid numbers locally. We will reevaluate in late December.

2nd and 3rd Tuesdays, 9:30 am via Zoom … Tuesday Tuneup. Our monthly open studio via Zoom. We pick a project that you can do, or you can work on your own project. Come for the feedback and camaraderie; no RSVP required. If you’re not on the email list, contact Lisa.

Not a member?

First meeting is free; please email us for information if you’d like to attend in person, or for a link if you’d like to attend virtually. Membership is $45 the first year, then $40 annually afterward.
